The movie titled “I am Sam” is a very beautiful and a really heart-warming film. It is really amazing how a mentally disabled father loves her daughter a lot. And Sam is a responsible to her daughter named Lucy. Sam clearly loves his daughter, but he finds himself ill-equipped to care for her as she grows older. Autism is the major conflict in the story.
I get pity to Sam Dawson because after when his wife gave birth to his first baby, his wife immediately left him. But Sam still gave his might to support and help his daughter Lucy. Even though Sam is a gifted autism, he works very neat and in an organized way. He always wanted things to be in place. One day, while his daughter, Lucy, was at school, the people concluded that Sam couldn't take the responsibility as a good father because they noticed that Sam is a mentally-retarded person. Furthermore, people thought that Sam has a behavior of a 7-year old child, that with this state of mind, he could never be a responsible father to Lucy. The institution which is concerned about children finally took Lucy away from Sam where on the other hand, Sam thought this would tear his world apart. With friends on his side, Sam strove with courage to win back his daughter. His friends kept on proving that Sam is responsible, kind, and a loving father but the jury didn't believed every revelation. Sam got a lawyer, Mrs. Turner, and this lawyer helped him regain the right for his daughter. Although Sam and his lawyer did their best to win the case, the court have decided to let Lucy be adopted by foster parents. Sam felt very bad about that verdict and since then, he kept thinking about his daughter. All ever Sam’s wanted to be with his daughter and live a simple and happy life together as father and daughter.
We believe that this film teaches us that we must open our eyes to the world of people with autism or mental retardation. It is helping us expand our knowledge and transcend our beliefs about their perceived limitations. Sam may only be one of the persons with that condition, but we have no way of knowing that other people like him do not experience a similar degree of emotional connection and simply lack the talents to express it.
After viewing the film, I've realized that every individual is unique in different ways. We are not perfect creations because we have flaws and weaknesses. We don't have to judge or criticize who ever we wanted to criticize because we were given no rights to cast a negative verdict towards other people. In Sam Dawson's case, I have learned that even a mentally-retarded person exists, there's still an existence of love also. I believed that even though he failed on winning his daughter back, there's still a single hope within his heart. Hoping that one day, Lucy and him will live an ordinary life in an ordinary way. A love of a parent doesn't require any fame, popularity, wealth, or wisdom. It's about a boundless emotion from the heavens given as a gift to keep our loved ones is special as can be. Everything is possible; we just needed to apply something special which is called 'Love'.
